Cancer is a major and growing concern, particularly in the western world; more than 12 million people are diagnosed every year, and over 7 million people are killed by cancer each year. Factors such as population growth and global changes in life style will cause these numbers to increase in the future.
An important part of the fundamental cancer treatment is radiation therapy. The NanoGuide project aims at enhancing the quality and precision of this type of treatment by developing a nanoparticle based tumour marker for image-guided radiotherapy.
